Bonneville Whitefish at Bear Lake
Chasing Bonneville Whitefish at Bear Lake (December Fishing Report)
December fishing in Utah often means cold hands, quiet shorelines, and surprisingly active fish—especially at Bear Lake. On this trip, I headed north to target one of the lake’s most unique species: the Bonneville Whitefish.
Unlike many fish that move deep as winter approaches, Bonneville Whitefish begin moving shallow in late fall and early winter to spawn. This makes December one of the best times of year to encounter them from shore or in shallow water.
A Unique Fishery at Bear Lake
Bear Lake is known for its endemic species, and the Bonneville Whitefish is one of the most underrated. These fish are strong, fast, and often mistaken for something else until they’re right at your feet.
When conditions line up, Whitefish can be caught on spinners, spoons, and other small moving baits. On this outing, I hooked into a Whitefish using a spinner.
The fish was unfortunately foul-hooked in the fin, and as a responsible angler, I released it immediately. Catch-and-release ethics are especially important during the spawn, and respecting these fish helps keep the fishery healthy.
Why December Is Prime Time
As water temperatures drop, Bonneville Whitefish move out of deeper water and stage in the shallows to spawn. This seasonal behavior creates a short window where anglers can specifically target them without needing a boat.
If you’re looking for something different from Trout or Panfish, Bonneville Whitefish are a great winter target—especially if you enjoy learning about unique local fisheries.
Gear and Approach
- Light to medium spinning gear
- Small spinners or spoons
- Slow, steady retrieves near the bottom
Being mobile and covering water can improve your chances, especially during low-light periods.
Final Thoughts
Trips like this are a reminder that winter fishing doesn’t have to mean staying home. With the right timing and a little knowledge, December can offer some of the most interesting fishing of the year—especially at a place as unique as Bear Lake.
